13 Weeks (Again!)

28 March 2007

I didn’t realize that the first trimester isn’t actually over until the end of week 14. AND I get to have a “do over” because of the new due date. Hmph.

Week 13 - iPod Shuffle Blueberry is the size of an (old) iPod Shuffle!

At the end of this week, your baby officially enters the second trimester of development. Your baby only weighs 1/2 to 3/4 of an ounce (about the weight of four quarters) and is just under 3 inches in length — but she is starting to look more human! Her eyes have moved from the sides of her head to the front (ew!) and her ears are in the normal position, although hearing will not develop for a few more weeks.

Your baby’s digestive tract continues to develop as tiny villi (hairs) form inside the intestines. These villi will help move food through your baby’s digestive tract. At this point all nourishment is received from the placenta. The pancreas has begun producing insulin, and all 20 teeth buds have formed inside your baby’s mouth.

If you could peek in again you may spot your baby as he begins to practice inhaling and exhaling movements. Baby’s neck is getting longer, and the chin no longer rests on her chest. Vocal chords have started to form. Her hands are becoming more functional – your baby may find it comforting to start playing with her fist.

The nausea is getting better, but sometimes it just hits me, as does the fatigue. We went rollerblading on Sunday for four miles, which resulted in me taking a three hour nap that afternoon while Tim waxed the truck. The headaches seem to be helped by adding a sublingual liquid B supplement that I take at least once a day.

The quest for maternity jeans continues…
