40 Weeks… Yup, That’s 10 Months Pregnant

2 October 2007

40 WeeksBlueberry is… well, I’m afraid to imagine what size Blueberry is at this point. The average baby weighs 7.5 to 8 pounds at this point, although full-term babies can weigh up to 10 or 11 pounds!  He’s probably around 21 to 22 inches long.

All I know is that I feel HUGE.  I swear, in the past 48 hours, I have grown two weeks’ worth.  I had been surprised all along at how relatively comfortable I was (for the most part, I had my moments/days for sure) and how easily I could still get around.  Yeah.  Not so much anymore.  I can barely get myself out of bed to pee in the middle of the night and getting out of the car usually requires assistance, thanks to the massive stomach I’m sporting this week.  I thought I would get away with an “average” baby but it’s looking more and more like he’ll be in line with Tim’s and my birth weights of 9 pounds, 10 ounces and 9 pounds, 2 ounces.

40 Week Belly PicI am ready to do this.  I’ve BEEN ready for at least a month.  We sort of got ourselves psyched out about things and thought there was no way we’d make it this far, so every week has been a bit of a disappointment that nothing has happened.  This past weekend, we decided that we were not going to spend another one cleaning, having a “last” grocery trip and sitting around the condo waiting on this kid.  Saturday was gorgeous and we drove out to West Virginia, making a couple of pit stops on the way and ultimately ending up at Charles Town’s casino.  I had never been before and it sounded like a good way to kill an afternoon.  If he’ not coming out, then I’m going to at least have some fun with his college fund.  Kidding.  We allowed ourselves $20 each on the slots and won back enough that we only lost $22 over the course of about three hours.  After dinner, we headed back home no closer to a Blueberry arrival than when we had left that morning.

40 WeeksSunday we ended up going in to the city to meet up with Tim’s family.  Jes, Allison (Tim’s local cousin) and Allison’s friend Barb were finishing up their MS fund raising walk.  Allison’s brothers made a surprise visit and everyone was getting together to meet up with the walkers at the end of their three-day, 50-mile journey in front of the Capitol building downtown.  We decided to Metro in and walk up there, much to everyone’s surprise.  Blueberry was excited about all the clapping and music and noise from the event — he spent the majority of it delivering kicks and flops to my stomach that required me to sit a lot, or hold on to Tim for dear life.  But overall, I did okay with the walking and standing until we headed back to Arlington, when I got a round of contractions that left me breathless.  In true Blueberry fashion, though, it was all for show and by the time we got to Clarendon again, I was fine.  That afternoon, I went for my “last” pedicure (my third “last” pedicure, mind you) while Tim worked on his bike.  Then we joined Jody & Jes for some pizza and a movie.  Another day with no Blueberry.  We were very glad that we hadn’t spent the weekend moping around the house again.

Even though I feel gargantuan now, I forget how huge I am/look and still get surprised when people look at me like I might spontaneously go in to labor at any minute.  The only saving grace is that I have not developed the pregnancy waddle this whole time.  Sometimes the baby-carrying hips come in handy, huh?  We got a good shot of the “three” of us in front of the building.  It looks like Blueberry is as big as the dome!

So… it’s more “hurry up and wait.”  I am trying to maintain a positive attitude, but it’s frustrating to both not know and to feel like I am doing something wrong or my body doesn’t know what to do.  I guess I just have to trust it to do its thing on its own time.  Meanwhile, I will do my best to keep eating, enjoying lots of baths and doing whatever I feel like doing right now.  Of course, anyone who actually gets me to respond to phone calls or e-mails already knows I’m not nearly that chipper in person lately… if you don’t hear from us until after the baby is born, don’t take it personally.   We plan on sending out a text when Tammi & Lori are on their way over and we’ll definitely post pictures and a short blog as soon as we have some happy news to share.  Here’s to hoping my next blog entry is not “41 Weeks”…

Wow! Hang in there! My best friend had her little girl at 1 week shy of 10 months. She had a hard time getting through those last few weeks but Ella finally came! She almost laughed to death during labor which helped with the pain… you should give it a go! Hope labor goes well and that is going to be one gorgeous baby!
